The 9-Step Application Process

1

Check If You Need a Visa

Determine whether your nationality requires a Schengen visa for short stays.

  • Nationals of 103 countries (Annex I) require a visa
  • UK, US, and 65+ other countries are visa-exempt
  • Your passport nationality matters, not your residence
  • Having a UK residence permit does NOT exempt you from visa requirements
Even if you hold a UK residence permit, if your passport is from a visa-required country, you still need a Schengen visa.

2

Understand the Visa Type

Select the correct visa category based on your travel purpose and duration.

  • Type C: Short stays up to 90 days (tourism, business, family)
  • Type D: Long stays over 90 days (work, study, residence)
  • Most visitors from the UK apply for Type C
  • This visa allows travel to all 29 Schengen countries

Determine Where to Apply

Identify the correct embassy or consulate based on your main destination.

  • Apply to the country where you'll spend the most time
  • If equal time in multiple countries, apply to first entry point
  • Must apply in your country of residence (UK)
  • Some countries use external service providers (VFS, BLS, TLS)
If your itinerary includes 5 days in France and 7 days in Spain, apply to the Spanish embassy as it's your main destination.
4

Complete the Application Form

Fill out the official Schengen visa application form accurately.

  • Download the official PDF form or complete online
  • Use black ink if filling by hand
  • Answer ALL questions (write N/A if not applicable)
  • Ensure information matches your passport exactly
  • Sign in the designated areas
Common mistakes: wrong passport validity dates, inconsistent travel dates, missing signatures. Our service ensures accuracy.

  • Peak seasons may have limited slots
  • Book early for summer and holiday periods
Summer (June-August) and December are peak seasons. Book your appointment as early as possible during these times.
6

Gather all required documents based on your purpose and circumstances.

  • Core documents: passport, photos, insurance, itinerary, finances
  • Purpose-specific documents (tourism, business, family, etc.)
  • Employment documents based on your status
  • Additional documents for minors
  • Organize in the consulate's preferred order

Your application is reviewed by the consulate.

  • Standard processing: 10-15 working days
  • Can extend to 45 days in complex cases
  • Some countries offer express processing
  • You can track status online (most centres)

  • Or choose courier delivery (additional fee)
  • Check visa details immediately for errors
  • If refused, you'll receive a rejection letter
  • Appeal options available if rejected

The Main Destination Rule

When visiting multiple Schengen countries, you must apply to the correct embassy. Here's how to determine which country to apply to:

Scenario

Visiting one country only

Rule

Apply to that country's embassy

Example

7-day trip to France → Apply to French embassy

Scenario

Multiple countries, unequal time

Rule

Apply to the country where you'll spend the most nights

Example

4 days Italy + 8 days Spain → Apply to Spanish embassy

Scenario

Multiple countries, equal time

Rule

Apply to the country of first entry into Schengen

Example

5 days France + 5 days Germany, entering via Paris → Apply to French embassy

Scenario

Main purpose in one country

Rule

Apply to the country of main purpose, even if shorter stay
